The Fall Weekend Trip Is Beating the Big Vacation

September 15, 20263 min read

Sometimes I don't need a vacation. I need two nights somewhere that doesn't involve my laundry room.

Don't get me wrong. I will happily board a plane, cross an ocean, and spend a week eating my way through a new city.

But a big vacation requires planning. And money. And enough PTO to disappear without returning to an overflowing inbox.

A fall weekend away tells a different story.

Two Nights Can Actually Feel Like a Break

I've fallen into the trap of thinking a trip isn't “worth it” unless I'm going somewhere for several days. That's nonsense.

Leave Friday afternoon and come home Sunday evening, and you've still managed to sleep somewhere different, eat a couple of meals you didn't cook, and see something other than the inside of your house.

The trick is not spending half the weekend getting there.

For a quick trip, I'd keep the destination within a few hours of home. Close enough that you can arrive before bedtime, but far enough away that your regular Saturday errands can't find you.

Fall Makes Road Trips Better

Summer road trips involve traffic, blazing-hot parking lots, and an ongoing argument with the air conditioning.

Fall gives us scenic drives. Pick somewhere with mountain roads, changing leaves, or little towns worth stopping in along the way. Grab your favorite drink before you leave and make the drive part of the trip instead of something you have to endure before the fun starts.

And yes, if I see a roadside sign advertising apple cider donuts, we're stopping.

You Don't Need a Huge Itinerary

The beauty of a weekend trip is that there isn't enough time to turn it into an elaborate production.

Pick one main thing you want to do. Maybe it's a hike with a ridiculous view. Or maybe you want to visit a winery or spend Saturday wandering around a cute downtown.

Do that. Then let the rest of the weekend happen around it.

I don't need six attractions before dinner to feel like I've gotten my money's worth anymore.

Spend a Little More on Where You Stay

When I'm only traveling for two nights, I'm more willing to spend a little extra on the hotel or cabin.

You're not dividing that splurge across an entire week, and on a short fall getaway, where you stay can be part of the experience.

Give me a fireplace. Give me a balcony overlooking the mountains. Give me a ridiculously comfortable bed I didn't have to make myself.

Pack Less Than You Think You Need

It's two nights. You don’t need four pairs of shoes, an emergency dinner outfit, or enough skincare to open a small spa.

Pack a comfortable daytime outfit, something for dinner, and layers because fall weather enjoys keeping us humble.

The lighter you pack, the easier it is to toss everything into the car on Friday afternoon and go.

The Little Trip Counts

I love having a big vacation on the calendar. There's something wonderful about planning a trip you've dreamed about for months.

But I don't want to wait for the big trip to give myself a break.

A weekend away can be spontaneous and considerably easier on the vacation-day balance. You don't need to travel very far to get that little mental reset that comes from waking up somewhere new.

So pick a town a few hours away, book somewhere cozy, and throw a sweater in the car.

The laundry will still be there Sunday night.

Unfortunately.
